💣 REVOLUTIONARY NATIONALISM (1897–1934)

SMART NOTES FOR UPSC (HEROIC ACTION TO SOCIALIST REVOLUTION)

🧭 OVERVIEW & EVOLUTIONARY TRAJECTORY

Revolutionary Nationalism emerged as a powerful stream of the Indian freedom struggle when peaceful constitutional methods (Moderates) and passive resistance (Extremists) were met with heavy colonial state repression. Operating through secret societies, armed rebellions, and political assassinations, revolutionaries sought to inspire patriotism and shatter the fear of the British Raj. The movement developed in two distinct phases: Phase I (1897–1917), characterized by individual heroic action and secret societies; and Phase II (1920s–1930s), influenced by Marxism and working-class struggles, aiming for a socialist revolution.

🔥 TRANSFORMATION OF IDEOLOGY

While Phase I focused on action by deed (assassination of oppressive British officials), Phase II under Bhagat Singh explicitly redefined revolution as the total restructuring of society to abolish exploitation of man by man.
